Stopped By Cops? Know Your Rights As A Driver

Posted October 23, 2021 by Inventriks Solutions

Almost every driver has had to deal with traffic police. This may not be a result of a breaking of the law. It is just one of the duties of the traffic police to ensure no one is violating the law by checking their driving license and asking a couple of questions. However, it is important that as a driver you know your rights. Below are some of the rights of a driver:

  • As a driver to stop by traffic police, it is imperative that you stop at their command, however, it is also your right to know why you are being stopped.
  • It is the right of a driver to not stop when asked to stop by traffic police if he or she feels the place is unsafe. However, he or she must stop where it is safer.
  • It is also within your rights as a driver to remain silent and only provide information relating to your license, registration, and insurance.
  • As a driver, you can refuse to have your vehicle to be searched unless there is a search warrant provided for it.
  • As a driver, you have the right to document your interaction with the traffic police with the dashboard camera in the case whereby you’ve been pulled over.

It is imperative that drivers act responsibly on the road as they were taught in their driving lessons by their driving instructors. This will not only help them avoid being frequently stopped by traffic police and also being sent for another drive test in Ontario.
