Depending on where you take your drivers test, and how difficult it is because of the location, the odds might be stacked against you. In some of the more difficult test areas, the first time fail rate can be over 50%. So what can you do to make sure that you make it through your driving test, and pass with flying colours? Here are some tips that should help you get your licence on the first try, and impress your tester while you’re at it!
Learning to drive can be daunting. The road can feel overwhelming when you’re driving, and you have to be able to react quickly if the worst happens. The only way to truly build your confidence though is to get driving time in. Take time to practice driving, and make sure that you’re practicing correctly and not developing bad habits before you take your driving test. If you are trying to get, your full G licence makes sure you’re out on the highway getting in some experience and do things that scare you, whether it is parallel parking or judging oncoming cars while turning left at a light. Build up your confidence, so that your nerves won’t get the best of you on the big day.
Before you take your driving test, make sure that your car is in good condition and is road ready. You will not be permitted to take your test for a myriad of reasons if your car is not in proper condition. You cannot have a check engine light on, for instance, and your horn and speedometer must be working, and there cannot be any cracks in your windshield. That only scratches the surface, though, and you should review a more comprehensive list to see if your car will pass inspection before your road test. If you can’t get your car up to the tester’s standards, then you can borrow someone else’s car for the test.
One of the biggest reasons for failing a road test, other than the inability to perform a single necessary skill – such as parallel parking – is having too many little mistakes that add up to a fail. If you just scrape by in every category but do not earn full marks then at the end of the test when everything is tallied up, you may not have enough marks to get your licence. Do a bit of research and find out what will be on the test and talk to friends to get a better understanding of what you will be doing. Make sure you practice these things and try to keep calm on the day of. Too many nerves will result in tiny mistakes that can add up.
