Immigrating to Ontario: How to Get Your Ontario Driver’s License

While obtaining a driver’s license might not be at the top of your list when immigrating to Canada, it is still vital. The entire process of getting your driver’s license primarily relies on your driving experience as well as the emigrating county.

With that said, here is a high-level overview to guide you through the entire process.

Graduated licensing system in Ontario

Ontario has three primary license levels:

  • G1: Beginners licensing. The holder isn’t allowed to drive without adults driving instructor and at certain hours
  • G2: Intermediate licensing acquired after passing the G1 drive test Ontario. Fewer restrictions compared to G1
  • G: Full license with zero restriction.

How to obtain your Ontario license

Usually, it is recommended that you begin the entire licensing process from your home country before migrating to Canada. In this regard, ensure that you bring the following from your home country;

  • International drivers license to use before obtaining Ontario drivers license
  • French or English-translated driver’s license copy& authentication letter from the relevant transportation authority
  • Proof of identity &Former experience.

Here are the requirements from the licensing office

  • Pass a vision test
  • Pass a writtentest to confirm your experience regarding Ontario driving regulations
  • Make necessary payments
  • Take a photograph.

Once you complete this, you will be eligible for a G1 license. Then, you’d have to take a G2 drive test, Ontario, to qualify for the next level.

Reciprocal licensing

If you previously had a license from the following countries, you may obtain an Ontario driver’s license without any form of test or driving lessons. Such nations include;

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • France
  • The UK, Northern Island. Isle of man
  • Korea
  • Switzerland
  • United States
  • Australia
  • Japan
