Continuing from How to prepare for your driving test: Part one. Once you’ve practiced all the skills your driving instructor has taught you and you feel confident to attempt your driving test, here are a few tips to help you during the test:
- Obey speed limits
During the test, be sure you obey the posted speed limit, which throughout the city is 50 km/h unless otherwise posted. The speed limit sign is often placed just past an intersection if the speed has changed. If you notice you are slightly above the speed limit, smoothly return to the speed limit as soon as possible. Keep this in mind while driving downhill. Speeding is a failure during your driving test, so watch your speed.
- Make sure you make complete stops
Looking well ahead will give you time to smoothly begin slowing down and come to a gentle stop at a stop sign. Wait until you feel the vehicle come to a complete stop before you check the intersection to see if it is safe to proceed. Once the way is clear of any approaching vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians, you may proceed.
- Lane choice
Always driving in the right lane since that lane is considered the driving lane, while the left lane is considered the passing lane. Change lanes after being asked to make a left turn, if a lane change is needed. You should also change lanes if the right lane is blocked for any reason. Lane changes are your responsibility. The steps for a lane change are checking your rear-view mirror, signal, check your outside mirror, and then your blind spot before moving into the next lane. If you slightly tilt up your rearview mirror, you will have to lift your head slightly to check it, making the mirror check more noticeable.
- Turning
Ensure you turn from the proper lane and enter the corresponding lane around the corner for each turn. Ensure you practice your turns so they are smooth and making them consistently smooth is important. Enter the intersection only when it is safe to do so. If you are turning left at a traffic light, remember to check for pedestrians or cyclists who may be going through the crosswalk before you turn. A quick blind spot check would help ensure the way is clear before turning.
- Low-speed skills
Although parallel parking, 3-point turns, and parking in a parking stall may cause some drivers to panic, they can be done easily. These skills should be practiced many times before your driving test so you are confident with them. If the low-speed skills are perfect, you can still pass the test. Be sure you signal each move, observe well, and have not done anything dangerous during those skills.
By following these tips, you should have a strong showing during your driving test and will soon become a licensed driver. With professional training and a lot of practice, you can be successful on your driving test. Let Fanshawe Driving School help you reach this goal of yours!
